Legends of the Taj Mahal

Legends of the Taj Mahal, AgraShrouded in an aura of romance, mystery and dreamy charm, the Taj Mahal in Agra, India has quite a few legends, stories and beliefs that add to its enigmatic quality.
About Taj Mahal makes an attempt at acquainting you with some of these popular legends.

Among the many legends that have been associated with the exquisite mausoleum is that the "Taj is sinking" gradually, though one doubts the authenticity of this statement. It was believed that the very foundations of the Taj on the northern side developed cracks that were instantly repaired but at the same time it was feared that the part of the Taj that lies on the side of the River Yamuna is inclined towards the river.

Another popular legend that has no historical foundations is that an Italian missionary claimed that an Italian jeweler Geronimo Veroneo was actively involved with the group of architects who gave shape to this magical monument whose existence itself defines beauty.

Legend goes that when Prince Aurangzeb heard of his fathers demise, he sent one of his aids to "thrust a heated iron rod through Shah Jahan's body to make sure that he was actually dead." Though another version from a considerably more reliable source states that Aurangzeb came to meet Queen Jahanara to condole his father's passing away.

Another one of the popular legends that are associated with the grand Taj is that Shah Jahan began laying the foundations for another mausoleum of the kind on the opposite side of the River for himself though the construction was abandoned. There seems to be some truth to this as archaeologists have discovered ruins that indicate the authenticity of this claim.

Of the legends associated with this dedication to love, another one that deserves a mention is that, it is believed that Emperor Shah Jahan's favorite elephant, Khaliqdad died during the funereal proceedings as it sensed that its master was no more.
