The
tomb of Allama Afzal Khan Mullah of Shiraz, the Prime
Minister in the Mughal court during Shah Jahan's reign,
Chini ka Rauza is located at a short distance from the
majestic Taj Mahal in Agra, India.
This lovely monument in Agra, India derives its name
from the tiles or chini that were used to decorate its
wall and ceilings. The blue, green and yellow tiles
that ornament this Agra mausoleum add a unique character
to it.
This rectangular monument with its bulbous tomb has
a central octagonal chamber with eight arched recess
with inscriptions marked with blue glazed tiles all
over the ceiling and the walls.
Located on the east bank of the River Yamuna, the Chini
ka Rauza is one of those monuments that reflect the
typical Persian influence on the Mughal architectural
style. The dome is decorated in the style of an inverted
lotus flower.
The geometric and floral arabesque done in multi-colored
glazed tiles add a special effect to this earth brown
structure. Chini ka Rauza used to have gateways on the
north and south with two towers and a Ghat near the
River Yamuna but unfortunately all that is left of this
monument is the main tomb that is in a state of complete
neglect.
